Nourish yourself with weekly writing workshops this winter in the Silo Salon, our newly opened spacious and sunny relaxation space, with a chic modern vibe next door to the Silo Cafe.
Come learn with Liane Wakabayashi, a journalist who writes articles celebrating the lives of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Her essays, blogs and articles have been published in New York, London, Tokyo, Kyoto, Jerusalem and Hong Kong over four decades. Liane is also the author of a memoir called, The Wagamama Bride: A Jewish Family Made in Japan, which was selected by the Jewish Federation’s National Women in Philanthropy as their December 2021 Off the Shelf book club selection.
Putting your life story down doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. Liane breaks the process down for you and shows you how to proceed step by step, one story at a time. She’ll provide you with an overview of the memoir-writing process, and how small sprints, even a few times a week, can build up the writer’s story-telling muscle to continue over the finish line. Whether writing a book, or one really satisfying story from the banquet of a life well lived, you’ll come away each session with tools to move you forward with your dreams and goals.
Each session, you’ll write for 45 minutes in a perfect writer’s oasis,—the gorgeous Silo Salon. Order beverages from the Silo menu, bask in the sunshine in oversized chairs, with a pen and notebook open, or bring your computer.
You’ll receive writing prompts each week too. Liane offers from a wealth of experience, as both an author and writing coach, and always from a spiritually uplifting point of view. With wisdom, there is always a story worth telling. She encourages you to recall impressive moments in your life, and make sure they shine with their impressiveness. You’ll practice dialogue, scene-building, and how to shine a light on divine providence—those magical moments when a split decision changed the course of your life.
Each session includes:
– Welcoming the session with a brief discussion led by Liane
– A quick warmup writing exercise and sharing it as a way of getting to know each other and what we each care about
– 45 minutes of writing time on a story of your choice
– Then, you’ll have the opportunity to share passages from what you’ve just written
Positive thinking, from start to finish, is Memoir Monday’s motto, and sharing feedback becomes an opportunity for giving and receiving encouragement and offering genuine praise. Because at the end of the day, writers need credit for their awesomeness. You showed up. You cared enough to want to remember your stories and pass them down.
